For transparency, reach for PET; for heat resistance, pick PP; for low cost, choose PE; for rigidity, go PVC

1. PET: the most”photogenic” packaging material
Features:As transparent as glass, yet it won’t shatter; rigid enough that you can’t squeeze it out of shape.
How to identify:Water bottles and cooking oil containers are mostly PET. Pick one up – the clarity is very high and the surface feels hard.
What is it suitable for?
- Juice and soft drinks where the product color needs to show
- Cooking oil, which demands an oxygen barrier
- Cosmetics that need a premium look and feel
Not recommended for:hot liquids (may deform above 70°C).
2. PE: the most”easygoing” material
PE comes in two main types:
- HDPE (rigid PE):almost as stiff as a shampoo bottle
- LDPE (soft PE):as flexible as cling film
How to identify:Squeeze them: HDPE feels like a rigid plastic sheet, while LDPE feels like a plastic bag.
What is it suitable for?
- HDPE: shampoo, laundry detergent, milk bottles
- LDPE: cling film, shopping bags, tube packaging
Advantages:Safe and non-toxic, available in food-grade versions, and economical.
3. PP: the only plastic that can go ”in the microwave” plastic
Features:Good heat resistance, withstands 121°C high-temperature sterilization.
How to identify:Microwave meal boxes and yogurt cups – the triangle mark at the bottom says ”5″or”PP”.
What is it suitable for?
- Takeout meal boxes (need reheating)
- Hot-filled jams and sauces
- Pharmaceutical packaging (needs sterilization)
4. PVC: the value pick (but use with caution)
Features:Cheap, transparent, with adjustable rigidity.
However:May contain plasticizers, so it is not suitable for direct food contact.
What is it suitable for?
- Cosmetic bottles (no food contact)
- Plastic trays for electronics
- Shrink sleeve labels
Not recommended:food packaging, especially oily foods.
5. PS: transparent but”brittle” packaging
Features:Highly transparent, but shatters when dropped.
How to identify:Disposable clear plastic boxes make a”crack” sound when snapped.
What is it suitable for?
- Fruit boxes at market stalls
- Disposable tableware
- Inner trays for electronics (no load-bearing needed)
Disadvantages:Not heat-resistant or impact-resistant, so it is unsuitable for long-term packaging use.
6. PVDC: the luxury-grade”freshness king”
Features:Excellent barrier performance that keeps food fresh longer.
However:Expensive! Generally reserved for premium products.
What is it suitable for?
- Premium vacuum-packed cooked foods
- Pharmaceutical blister packaging
- Imported cheese packaging
