What is BPA? Which packaging materials use it?
BPA is an organic compound used mainly as a raw material for polycarbonate (PC) and epoxy resins. In the packaging world, BPA turns up in PC water bottles and baby bottles, and in the epoxy linings applied inside metal and beverage cans. The important point is that ordinary flexible food pouches — PE, PP, PET laminates and foil pouches — essentially do not use BPA in their production. How big is the BPA risk really?
BPA is classified as an endocrine disruptor. The EU banned it in baby bottles in 2011, tightened the migration limits for food contact materials in 2024, and has announced plans for a full ban on BPA in food contact materials. China’s GB 9685 also lays down explicit BPA migration limits. Objectively speaking, the risk stems from long-term, low-dose accumulation rather than any kind of “poison on contact”. For ordinary consumers, the real task is avoiding high-risk scenarios, not treating every piece of plastic packaging as a hazard.
Which products are most likely to trip the BPA trap?
Two categories catch most people out. The first is PC food containers — especially when they hold hot water, hot soup or oily food, because heat accelerates BPA migration. The second is metal can inner coatings, where older epoxy linings may still contain BPA. Concerned consumers can switch to glass or stainless steel containers, or pick products explicitly labelled “BPA Free”. How does a flexible packaging factory ensure BPA-free products?
For a flexible packaging factory, BPA control is fairly straightforward. First, the raw materials used — PE, PP, PET, PA and foil — inherently contain no BPA. Second, inks and adhesives are selected as BPA-free formulations, with confirmation carried out at the supplier level. Third, supplier test reports are filed per batch so a traceable quality archive is maintained. Buying advice for consumers

Third, for microwave heating, choose containers explicitly marked microwave-safe. Fourth, when buying packaging for baby food, select brands clearly labelled BPA Free.
