Food Vacuum Packaging Technology: Material Selection and Practical Guide

1. Core requirements of food vacuum packaging technology

As pre-prepared meals, fresh food e-commerce and sterilized medical packaging continue to expand, vacuum packaging technology has become an essential technical link in both the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Product type Core requirements Recommended material structure
Food products Good barrier, food safety PET/AL/PE
Fresh products Moisture resistance, puncture resistance PET/NY/PE
Pharmaceutical products Sterilization compatibility, high barrier PA/AL/CPP

Recognizing how these product categories differ is the starting point for selecting the right vacuum packaging solution.

2. Material structure selection

2.1 Short shelf life products (3-6 months)

Suitable for fresh foods, refrigerated ready meals and other products meant to be consumed within a few months.

  • Recommended structure:PET/PE or PET/VMPET/PE
  • Features:Moderate cost, barrier meets short-shelf-life needs
  • Note:Avoid pure PE single-layer film – its barrier is insufficient

2.2 Medium shelf life products (6-12 months)

Suitable for most prepared dishes, cooked meats and frozen convenience foods.

  • Recommended structure:PET/AL/PE
  • Features:Aluminum foil provides excellent barrier at controlled cost
  • Note:AL (aluminum foil) has better barrier than VMPET (metallized)

2.3 Long shelf life products (12 months+)

Suitable for exported foods, premium meats and products with strict shelf-life demands.

  • Recommended structure:PET/AL/PA/PE or PET/EVOH/PE
  • Features:Multi-layer high barrier; EVOH provides top-tier oxygen barrier
  • Note:Higher cost, suitable for premium-positioned products

3. Pouch type selection

  • Stand-up pouch (Doypack):Mainstream e-commerce choice, excellent 3D display
  • Eight-side seal pouch:First choice for premium brands, flat bottom, most stable standing
  • Three-side seal flat pouch:Economical choice, suitable for small packaging

4. Three practical pitfalls in vacuum packaging

Pitfall 1: residual oxygen content too high

Solution:Use high-barrier structures containing AL or EVOH, and keep residual oxygen in the package at 1% or below through nitrogen flushing.

Pitfall 2: insufficient heat-seal strength

Solution:Specify high-quality heat-seal materials, and request heat-seal strength test reports (>=3N/15mm) from the supplier.

Pitfall 3: sharp contents puncture the packaging

Solution:Add a NY (nylon) layer to the outer layer for puncture resistance, and choose laminated film with thickness >=120μm.

5. Environmental trends

A 2026 survey shows over 60% of consumers pay attention to the environmental impact of packaging when purchasing.

  • Mono-material PE structure:Entire pouch recyclable, suitable for medium-shelf-life foods
  • With PCR recycled plastic:Outer layer uses laminated film containing 30%-50% PCR material
  • Compostable materials:Suitable for foods with short shelf life and low barrier requirements
